LGBTQIA+ and Aging with Pride
Compartir
“I never imagined I would grow old, let alone proud.”
This is something we’ve heard more than once — and it speaks volumes.
Aging while being LGBTQIA+ means walking through a world that wasn't always safe, surviving it, and still having to fight to be seen. And in a culture obsessed with youth, aging with pride is an act of resistance, a form of fashion as protest.
The hidden generation
Many older LGBTQIA+ people came of age when being out was not only dangerous — it was criminalized. That fear doesn’t vanish with time.
According to AARP's 2022 report on LGBTQ+ aging, nearly 50% of LGBTQ adults aged 45+ are concerned about having to hide their identity to access housing or care as they age. And while community is vital, most live alone, far more than their non-LGBTQ peers, increasing vulnerability to isolation.
This generation helped build Pride. Yet many still feel invisible in a world that rarely honors their journey.

The power of chosen family
Without support from traditional families, LGBTQIA+ elders have long relied on chosen family. These networks were built out of love and necessity, a fierce act of survival and community care.
Chosen family: the original support system.
But here's the reality: systems still fail to recognize these families, especially in housing, healthcare, and legal protections.

Resilience is radical
They lived through the first pride parade, the AIDS crisis, criminalization, and decades without LGBTQ visibility. They wore Pride before it was safe, when it was survival, not fashion.
Still, challenges remain. According to SAGE’s AgeMyWay report, nearly 90% of LGBTQ+ elders say it's important to age in their own homes and communities, yet many fear discrimination in housing, healthcare, and social services. The desire for independence collides with the lack of inclusive support systems.
Their continued resistance reminds us that pride started as protest, and still is.
Love and visibility at every stage of life.
