Coming Out Later in Life

Coming Out Later in Life

“There’s no expiration date on being your authentic self.”
For many LGBTQIA+ adults, coming out in midlife or beyond is a courageous act of self-love, and sometimes survival.

📊 Who comes out later? The data says:

A 2025 Pew Research Center survey found that:

  • 67% of gay or lesbian adults under 30 came out before age 18.

  • But among those aged 50 or older, only 24% had come out before 18

This illustrates a clear generational gap: people today come out earlier, while older adults often delayed or never disclosed their identity publicly.

Data from the Williams Institute (Generations Study) shows that older generations typically came out in their mid-to-late 20s:

  • Younger LGB (18–25) came out at ~17

  • Middle-aged LGB (34–41) at ~22

  • Older LGB (52–59) at ~26

🚶♂️ Why do some people wait?

Delaying coming out can stem from:

  • Conservative social norms or religious beliefs during upbringing

  • Internalized homophobia or denial

  • Fear of losing jobs, family ties, or community

  • Life transitions like marriage or parenthood that complicate identity disclosure

Take the Jim, a man who came out as gay at 90 in the ABC documentary Late to the Party, surviving decades of secrecy and finally choosing authenticity.

🧠 Mental health and late disclosure

Living closeted for decades can carry emotional consequences:

  • Long-term stress and isolation

  • Anxiety about late disclosure

  • Challenges rebuilding identity in later life

But research also shows positive impacts: individuals often experience relief, improved self-esteem, and deeper authenticity after coming out, even late.
